we're kept on a pretty tight leash. Savannah is pretty sketchy, so we're not allowed to be out in town after our afternoon class. so if you miss your bus back to the dorms, you have to actually wait there while they call in another bus, instead of just walking back. this happened to half of my filmmaking class yesterday because the other class decided not to tell the bus to wait for us. so the bus left. 10 minutes early, and just as we were running up to the street from our filming set, no less. wtf guys? thanks a lot. you can't walk if you miss your bus to or from the morning class, either. Paula and I missed our afternoon bus today by like 2 seconds - literally - so they had to call in another bus just for the 2 of us. which was good for me, cuz filmmaking class is all the way on the edge of town by the river and the bridge, but Paula could have walked to her photo class cuz it's only like 10 blocks or so away. I felt kinda bad cuz it was only us 2.
my morning and afternoon classes were Digital Photography and Video/Television (filmmaking), respectively. Bergen Hall (photo) is really nice. I like the architecture. the outside looks kinda old (Savannah does that; they keep the outside facade and renevate the inside), but the inside is nice and clean and modern. it's pretty cool. plus, they have printers that can print up to 44 inches wide! awesome! Hamilton Hall (filmmaking) is the same in terms of old outside/new inside, and they have tons of actual, professional type video cameras. and there's mac computers ALL OVER THE PLACE in each building. I played a dead body for my group's short film. that was fun.
and now for some Savannah GHOST STORIES!!!
Apparently, there are 3 ghosts in the Oglethorpe House (dorm). It used to be a hotel, and prostitution was a frequent practice. Now, sometimes, at night you can hear a woman walking up and down the 6th floor hallways.
The ghost of a little boy haunts another floor. He runs up and down the hallways and leaves puddles behind. If you see random puddles in the hallway for no apparent reason, you know "Little Puddles" has been there.
And on the 3rd floor, there is one room with a strangler! The man went into his son's room each night and attempted to strangle him to death. Of course, he eventually succeeded. Now, if you wake up and feel hands on your throat, and it seems like you're being strangled, you probably are. A room change request will be immediately honored. (Yes, this has happened several times.)
Apparently, there is the ghost of a little girl who wanders Savannah often. She died at the age of 5 from illness. She was the daughter of an innkeeper and tried to escape into the city to play many times. Now that she's dead, so does in fact do so. She has been spotted in the park jumping rope, in an inn room tickling a man's feet in the middle of a night (what?) and tying his shoelaces, and other such little girl activities.
There is a house in Savannah, owned and lived in by a family, in which you will often wake up in the middle of the night to a blood curdling scream and "OH MY GOD THERE'S SO MUCH BLOOD THERE'S SO MUCH BLOOD!!!!" Apparently no one knows the story behind these screams. I really want to research this lol.
In one of the office buildings in Savannah, the ghost of a janitor (haha I found this amusing because of our student horror film) still comes to work on a bicycle and you can hear his keys jingling as he walks through the hallways. An office suporvisor also shows up to meetings and hangs out in his old office. Some new employees have asked who they are and been scared off, but most are just used to them.
A woman came to Savannah as an indentured servant to a mean old man. His only request was that she wash his hair every night. And when she did so, he would constantly make sexual advances on her and try to force her into bed. (RAPE!) Eventually she got so sick of it that one night she dunked his head into the water and drowned him with the help of her boyfriend. Then they dumped the body and skipped town, thinking they'd be safe. However, they were caught and brought back. The boyfriend was immediately guillotined, but the woman was kept in prison for several months. She was pregnant. When the baby was born, they took it away and hung her. Now, if you go to the colonial square where she was hung sometime in the middle of the night, you might see her wandering the square crying and looking for her stolen baby. (The baby actually died from illness soon after birth.)
More to come!
